Important: This release of StarTeam
Import/Export Manager works with no servers prior to StarTeam 2005 Release 2.
As a one-time necessity, StarTeam Import/Export Manager is a set of utilities that allows you to copy data from a project from one StarTeam Server to another that already has projects in it. The feature set for this product has been reduced because it promised more than it could deliver. Most customers have used StarTeam Import/Export Manager in the past to move single projects and that is now the supported use case.
StarTeam Import/Export Manager is made up of two utilities, stexport and stimport. The stexport utility copies the data to a set of XML files. It copies file revisions to a set of text and binary files, depending on the contents of the file. The stimport utility copies the output from the dump utility to the designated server configuration, parent view, or parent folder.
See the StarTeam Import/Export Manager User's Guide (stiemgr.pdf) for more details. In particular, you should review the limitations for StarTeam Import/Export Manager. The utilities cannot accurately copy all StarTeam server information because of deletions, moved items, and shared items. Additionally, project names, branching views based on labels, links, custom fields, licenses, and illegal XML characters can also cause problems.
Important: This product should
not be used as a way of backing up StarTeam Server. For more information about
backups, refer to the StarTeam Installation Guide, install.pdf (http://info.borland.com/techpubs/starteam).

To review the limitations of StarTeam Import/Export Manager, see the StarTeam Import/Export Manager User's Guide (stiemgr.pdf) located in the <Drive>:\Program Files\Borland\StarTeam Import Export Manager\PDF folder.
The export and import utilities will fail if they are run against an invalid server configuration. An invalid server configuration has an invalid database or a repository that is either corrupted or out of synchronization with the database.
If you run the export or import utility on a different computer than StarTeam Server, make sure that the system times on both computers are synchronized. Otherwise, you may experience errors while running the utilities.
The installer sets the Xmx option for both stimport.lax and stexport.lax as follows:
lax.nl.java.option.additional=-Xmx1024m
If you see OutOfMemory errors, try increasing the Xmx option setting as follows:
lax.nl.java.option.additional=-XmxMAX_ALLOWED_MEMORY -XX:+UseDefaultStackSize -Xss128K -Xint
Where MAX_ALLOWED_MEMORY may be up to 1600m on a Windows computer, depending on the versions of your operating system and the JRE.
Be sure to synchronize the system clocks if you plan to run StarTeam Import/Export Manager with the server/client on different machines. Without the system clocks syncronized, the application generates an exception message including the text, The selected configuration is not valid for the current view.
